William was born about 1882 in Horsell.1   William's father was Allen STEER and his mother was Hannah Mant. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Edward, Vernon, Hubert, Mildred, Ella, Nellie, Daisy and Elsie.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
