William was born about 1890 in Spalding, Lincolnshire.1   William's father was Fred STEER and his mother was Mary Ann STEER. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Benjamin, Fred Wm, Charles, Alfred, May Ann and Ethel May.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
