Thomas was born about 1885 in Rotherham, Yorkshire.1   Thomas' father was William STEER and his mother was Annie STEER. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Eliza.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Wilfred, Frank, Christabel and Jane.
