Matilda was born about 1853 in Devon.1   Matilda's father was Philip STEER and her mother was Julia A STEER. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Walter, Stafford, Clarence, Anthony, Herbert, Ernest, Florence, Julia A F and Bertha.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
