Mary Ellen was born about 1884 in Kingswood, Surrey.1   Mary Ellen's father was James William “William James” STEER and her mother was Harriet Chitty.  Her maternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. She had two brothers and three sisters, named William Henry, Frederick, Rose Annie, Florence Matilda and Lillian S.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
