John Prout was born about 1859 in Devon.1   John Prout's father was Saml Wakeham STEER and his mother was Hannah STEER. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thos, Albert Peter, Frederick, Elizth Ann, Mary Hannah, Sarah Jane and Harriett.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
