John was born about 1846 in Crediton Devon.1   John's father was Robert STEER and his mother was Jane STEER.  His maternal grandfather was John ELSTON and his maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Francis, Henry, Elizabeth, Emma and Lucy.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
