James Charles was born about 1878 in Llangyfelach, Glamorganshire, Wales.1   James Charles' father was Henry Phillip STEER and his mother was Margaret STEER. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William George, Phillip Jno, Richard Henry, Charlotte Ann and Mary Catherine.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
