Harriet was born about 1837 in High Wycombe Bucks.1   Harriet's father was William STEER and her mother was Harriet D STEER. She had six brothers and a sister, named Edward, James, Robert, George, Austyn, Henry and Martha.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
