George was born about 1880 in Sheffield, Yorkshire.1   George's father was William STEER and his mother was Betsy Ann STEER. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Richard, Samuel, William, Horatio, Polly, Emma, Ada and Eliza.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
