George was born in 1823 in Lingfield Surrey. George's father was George STEER and his mother was Elizabeth STONE.  His paternal grandparents were Edward STEER and Mary SMITH. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, William, Edward and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the five children.
