Charles J was born about 1883 in Alton, Hampshire.1   Charles J's father was Ernest H STEER and his mother was Eveline E STEER. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Frederick J, Walter L, Harry F, Eveline Emma, Minnie L, Mabel A, Agnes M and Florence S.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
