Arthur was born about 1870 in Lenham, Kent.1   Arthur's father was Benjamin STEARS and his mother was Ann STEARS. He had five sisters named Lavinia E, Amelia R, Susannah J, Laura R and Rosa C.  He was the oldest of the six children.
