Joseph was born about 1835 in Exford Somerset.1   Joseph's father was John STEAR and his mother was Agnes STEAR. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Richard, Lewis, Thomas, William, Keziah, Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
