James was born about 1887 in Hackney, London.1   James' father was Joseph STEAR and his mother was Eleanor STEAR. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Thomas, Henry, Frederick, Jane, Ethel and Katherine.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
