Maude was born in 1851 in Rennington Northumberland.1   Maude's father was Henry Richard Ridley and her mother was Georgiana Augusta Frederica Bradford.  Her maternal grandparents were Sir Thomas Bradford and Mary Ann Atkinson. She had four sisters named Edith, Mabel, Bertha and Mildred.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
