Edward was born in 1844 in Eglingham Northumberland.1  Edward's father was Henry Joseph Maltby and his mother was Elizabeth Mary Bradford.  His maternal grandparents were Sir Thomas Bradford and Mary Ann Atkinson. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Gerald, Ralph, Julia and Elizth.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
