George's father was John Wild and his mother was Hannah Dodgson (of Thorner).  His maternal grandparents were Matthew Dodgson (of Shadwell & Tadcaster) and Eleanor Thompson. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John, William, James, Samuel, Charles, Frederick, Anne, Eliza and Hannah.  He was the third youngest of the ten children. He had a half-sister named Ellen.
