Joseph's father was Joseph Waterhouse and his mother was Leah Torner.  His paternal grandparents were James Waterhouse and Mary; his maternal grandparents were George Torner and Mary. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Levi, William, Harriott, Hannah, Grace, Elizabeth, Caroline and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
