Ellen was born in 1858 in Potters Bar, Middlesex.

Ellen's father was Joseph Shambrook and her mother was Charlotte Distill. Her paternal grandparents were Daniel Shambrook and Maria Lane; her maternal grandparents were James Distill and Ann Beach. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Arthur, George, Rebecca and Eliza. She was the second oldest of the five children.
