Thomas' father was John Potter and his mother was Ann Calaby.  His paternal grandparents were Willm. Potter and Alice Thacker; his maternal grandparents were John Callaby and Ann Holmes. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Charles, Francis, Mary, Alice, Elizabeth, Jane, Ann and Susan.  He was the oldest of the nine children.

‌Thomas and Rebecca were married.  They had two biological sons and a biological daughter, named Henry, John and Elizabeth.  They also had a foster son named Frederick.
