William's father was William Pearse and his mother was Celia Vivian.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Pearse and Ann; his maternal grandparents were John Vivian (of Salcombe) and Elizabeth Davey. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Arthur, Elizabeth, Richard, Florence and Percival.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
