Robert was born before 1838 and his baptism took place on January 10th, 1838 in St. Andrew's, Holborn, Middlesex. Robert's father was John Letts and his mother was Eliza. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Henry, william, Eliza, Sophia and Ann. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
