Mary's father was John Letts and her mother was Mary Ann Lowes.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Letts and Sarah Buckland. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, George, Henry, Anne and Emily.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
