John's father was John Letts and his mother was Mary Ann Lowes.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Letts and Sarah Buckland. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, George, Henry, Mary, Anne and Emily.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
