Frederick was born in 1829 in Walton on the Hill, Surrey.¹

Frederick's father was William Letts and his mother was Jane Sadler.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Letts and Hannah Rappley. He had a brother and four sisters, named Joseph, Ann, Mary, Martha and Emma.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
