William was born before 1709. William's father was William Hitt (Clyst Hydon) and his mother was Dorothy White (Feniton).  His paternal grandparents were William Hitt and Susanna Rugg; his maternal grandparents were John White (Feniton) and Elizabeth Palmer. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Mary and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, Henry, Philip, Charles, Dorothy, Elizabeth and Eliana.
