Joseph's father was Richard Flatt and his mother was Mary Wortley.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Flatt (of Methwold) and Elizabeth; his maternal grandfather was Thomas Wortley. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Richard, Ann, Elizabeth and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the six children.
