James' father was James Distill and his mother was Ann Beach.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Distill and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Beach and Catharine Borkett. He had a brother and six sisters, named Henry, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Susannah and Charlotte.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
