Hester was born on September 19th, 1899. Hester's father was Tobias Johannes Winterbach and her mother was Johanna Christina Wilhelmina van Wyk. Her paternal grandparents were Dirk Jacobus Winterbach and Hester Francina Elizabetha Verster. She had four brothers and a sister, named Dirk, Wynnant, Tobias, Tobias and Magdalena. She was the youngest of the six children.-
