Gillian was born on July 22nd, 1947 in Wrexham, Denbighshire. Gillian's father was Sidney Thomas KIRBY and her mother was Gwladys May ROBERTS.  Her maternal grandparents were James Henry ROBERTS and Margaret Emma ROBERTS. She has a brother and a sister, named Barry and Marilyn.  She is the second oldest of the three children.
