William was born in 1857 in Beechworh.1  William's father was William FAULKNER and his mother was Ellen Anne SWAN.  His paternal grandparents were William FAULKNER and Sarah Ann KELLY; his maternal grandparents were John SWAN and Ann BROWNLEIGH. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Andrew Ross, Sarah Ann, Ellen Jane and Catherine Mary.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 56 on July 30th, 1913 in Melbourne.  He was buried on August 1st, 1913 in Bright Cemetery.2
