Alexander was born in 1878 in Thorpe Morieux. Alexander's father was John BIRD and his mother was Ellen ROPER. His paternal grandparents were John BIRD and Lydia WHITTLE; his maternal grandparents were Samuel ROPER and Lydia Seeley LAMBERT. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, Henry, Samuel, William, Charles, Alfred, Rachel, Deborah, Julia and Jane. He was the youngest of the eleven children.-
