Headstone - Isaac & Mary Mather
On-Line Parish Clerks Project
When Isaac died in the workhouse, his widowed daughter, Eliza Pendlebury, did not leave him to a pauper's burial. Because her husband James had passed away seven years earlier and owned this private plot (Grave 28), Eliza still held the legal ownership rights (the Grant paper) to her late husband's grave. She used her right as a widow to open James's grave and lay her elderly father, Isaac, to rest right on top of him.
Occupant 1 (11 Jan 1874): James Pendlebury, aged 60, Coal Dealer. (He purchased the grant).
Occupant 2 (10 Sep 1881): Isaac Mather, aged 72, Weaver. (His daughter Eliza laid him to rest with her late husband).
Occupant 3 (23 Oct 1883): Mary Mather (Age 72, Widow). Died at 4 Simpson Street. Laid to rest with her husband Isaac and son-in-law.
Occupant 4 (3 Apr 1894): Eliza Mather Pendlebury (Age 56, Widow). Died at 18 Simpson Street. Reunited with her parents and her husband.
This record beautifully connects the 4 Simpson Street address that appears later in the timeline. When Eliza Pendlebury and her sons John and Israel moved into 4 Simpson Street by the 1891 census, they were living in the exact same house where her mother Mary had passed away eight years prior in 1883.
