Happy
Lomax
75
75
NOTE: There was another Happy Lomax (1786-1799) of Breightmet, buried at Cockey. This may Happy's illegitimate daughter.
In 1790, Happy was about 22 when she married James Mather at St Peter's, Bolton.
When aged about 43, Happy was on the 1811 Little Bolton Poor List, living at Blackburn Street. This was the year that her husband James Mather died. Her grandson John (and Ellen nee Buckley) were living in Blackburn Street in 1841.
Happy married 3 times, but with such a unique name, she is easy to trace. She is described as a spinster for each marriage, although she is clearly a widower for the second and third. Her granddaughter and several other realtives were also named Happy.
17 Nov 1816, Happy Mather married Joseph Baron. Their witness Henry Butterworth was probably the son of John and Alice (and of a similar age to the couple) also from Little Bolton
In 1841, Happy Cheeetham (70) was living with Ann Boardman (75), in the Alms House, Little Bolton, an OAP's home for widows and spinsters, and there were 11 old women in the same residence.
The death certificate doesn't give any clues of her previous marriages, except to tell us that William Cheetham was a weaver.
25 Jun 1843, Happy Cheetham was buried at the Wesleyan Methodist, Bolton with her son Samuel Mather (who died in 1854).

Lives with: Who was James with Samuel and Alice? Is this a husband of another of thier daughters? Probably simply a lodger and workmate of Samuel (both are Weavers)
Neighbor: Both families close neighbours in Kay Street, Little Bolton in 1841 (and on adjacent pages 18-19 on the census), 9 entries appart on census.
Relative of: Happy Shuttleworth and George Mather had their children baptised as Bolton-le-Moors togather on the 29th Sep 1861. Samuel (son of Phineas and Happy) Frederick William (son of George and Mary) Clara Ann (dau of George and Mary)
Lives with: Alice (82) was boarding with Phineas and Happy Shuttleworth and their son Samuel and grandson Jessie Collins in 1871
Representative of: In 1856, John was a witness to younger brother George's marriage to Mary Marsh. Both could sign their names.
Representative of: In 1837, Lomas was witness to John Mather's marriage. Is ha a brother?
Representative of: In 1842, Alice was witness to sister Happy's marriage to John Barrow
1829 - 1906
George
Mather
77
77
In 1841, George was living at Waterloo, Little Bolton (age 13).
In 1851 he was still with parents and sister Happy and her daughter Maria Barrow.
Recorded as b.1829 and married to Mary in 1871 census.
Living at Walmesley (Walmsley), Turton, Lancashire in 1891, or is this the other George Mather from Bury? There is another George, son of Samuel and Ellen who was christened in Bolton in 1829.
1820 - 1874
Alice
Mather
53
53
There are 5 possible marriages (and 6 deaths) of Alice Mather in Bolton (all at St Peter's) between the 1841 and 1851 census: Possible marriages are:
Q2-1844 vol21,p73 - William Crowshaw
Q4-1844 vol21,p70 - James Brooks (matched)
Q3-1846 vol21,p59 - John Alen
9-May-1849 vol21,p91 - Henry Latham (also matched)
1851 - Richard Townley
In 1842, Alice was witness to sister Happy's marriage to John Barrow
In 1844, Alice married James Brooks. Her father is recorded as Samuel Mather, Weaver
Alice was living with her parents, Samuel and Alice Mather at Waterloo in 1841.
By 1851 Alice had married James Brooks, and was living at 6 Waterloo Fold, possibly the same place.
1823 - 1889
Happy
Mather
66
66
Living in Little Bolton in 1841, 1851
Happy, was a minor (about 20) when she married John Barrow, a Chemist, on 5th Sep 1842 at Ainsworth Christ Church, Bury (parish of Middleton). No other Mathers married here, although there are several BARROW marriages.
John Barrow died three years after the marriage in 1845.
By 1851, Happy had lost her first husband and was living with her daughter Maria and parents, Samuel and Alice. 1851 census has her as Married, not Widowed, but she probably was.
Happy's father Samuel died in 1854. It appears that Happy of Rose Hill,.was in attendance at her fathers death (but it looks like Harry Shuttleworth on the certificate).
By 1861 Happy's father Samuel has died. Happy has remarried Phineas Shuttleworth, and is now living at 167 Lever Street, Little Bolton, still with her daughter Maria and mother Alice Mather.
Happy, Phineas and son Samuel living at 67 Blackbank Street, Little Bolton in 1871.
Happy died in 1889, followed by Phineas three years later. Happy and Phineas Shuttleworth are buried in a grave with 4 other Shuttleworts at Astley Bridge: Albert (1); John Greenhalgh (0); Samuel (62) and Lois (68).
1815 - 1865
John
Mather

John and Ellen are my 2x Great Grandparents. I.e. John is my great great grandfather. John was a baptist, and probably attended Moor Street Chapel, although he later married Elizabeth Kay at Dukes Alley Chapel.
9 Oct 1837, John, a spinner, and Ellen were living in Halliwell when they married at St Mary's, Deane.
After he married Ellen, he stayed at their family home at Crook Street (1838 when Benjamin born and 1843 when wife Ellen died), although his family house was at Blackburn Street.
In 1841, John (25) was living with Ellen (20) and son Joseph (1) at Blackburn Street, Little Bolton (not with parents), working as a Cotton Spinner.
20 Sep 1843, John was living at Coopers Square, Little Bolton (on Wedding certificate). The Bolton Cronical reported John Mather of Little Bolton marrying Miss Elizabeth Kay of Halliwell.
Between 1844 and 1854, John and Elizbeth had 6 more children, all registered at Little Bolton. Elizabeth Mather registered in 1841 is another family (Joshua Mather and Elizabeth Kay) also in Little Bolton.
In 1851, John was living at 58 Chorley St., Bolton (a labourer at the Iron Works, age 35) with new wife Elizabeth (32) and son Joseph (11), Hannah (6), Samuel (4), Margaret (2) and Sarah A (8mo)
Samuel Mather confirmed as father on marriage certificate. Making a fair assumption that Isaac Mather (the only other Mather family living in Little Bolton in 1851) is a brother. Isaacs father is also known to be Samuel.
In 1856, John was a witness to younger brother George's marriage to Mary Marsh. Both could sign their names.
In 1861, John and Elizabeth (45 and 43) are at 114 Chorley Street with their children Joseph (21), Hannah (16), Samuel (14), Margaret (12), Sarah (10), John (8) and Ruth (6).
In 1864, John of 114 Chorley Street died.
1791 - 1854
Samuel
Mather
63
63
Samuel's father lived in Dean in 1793 where sister Maria was born, but by 1795 was in Great Bolton. Nanny's baptism of 1799 shows the family in Ainsworth parish.
Samuel lived in Halliwell. Sons Isaac and John both married at Deane (1834 and 1837) with Halliwell recorded as the abode for John.
From 1818 to after 1829, another Samuel Mather and wife Ellen was a Moulder, living at 63 (and later 67) Spring Gardens (see trade directories), then Dawes St in 1841. This was not our Samuel who was a weaver at Waterloo in 1841, although his son John did work at the Iron Works and sister Maria was at Spring Gardens in 1843.
Recorded as John Mather's father on his wedding certificates of 1837 and 1843
Samuel Kay was witness to Elizabeth's wedding to John Mather in 1843. Still living in Little Bolton in 1851.
In 1841, Samuel and Alice (both 50) were at Waterloo. Four children; Alice (20), Happy (15), Samuel (15) and George (13) were with them as well as James Tyldsley (probably a lodger). At this time, there’s a population of over 613K, about 59K were cotton weavers, and 800 silk weavers. About 2,600 are involved with spinning.
In 1851, Samuel and Alice (both 60) were at 4 Simpson Street (by Waterloo Fold) with son George (21), daughter Happy Barrow (28) and granddaughter Maria Barrow (aged 7). His son Isaac was at No. 1 Simpson Street. Samuel was from "Great Bolton" and Alice from Turton.
1 May 1854, Samuel Mather of 4 Simpson Street died, aged 64. Samuel and his mother Happy (Cheetham when died) are buried at the Wesleyan Methodist, Bolton.
1810 - 1881
Isaac
Mather
70
70
Isaac was born 13 Oct 1810 and baptised 11 Jan 1811 at the Ridgway Gates Wesleyan Chapel, just a month after his parents married. Isaac, the oldest of the Mather sons of Samuel and Alice, was living in Little Bolton in 1841, 1851, 1861. His infant children were buried at St. Peter (CoE).
In 1841, Isaac and Mary (30 & 25) were at Kay Street, Little Bolton with their daughter Eliza (4).
In 1851, Isaac, a Hand Loom Weaver, and Mary (41 & 39) were at 1 Simpson Street, Little Bolton (with parents at No. 4). Eliza was 13, Samuel 7 and Jane 3.
In 1861, Isaac, cotton weaver, and Mary (51 & 49) are at 2 Nuttall Square "off Blackburn Road West Side", St George's, Little Bolton. They have Samuel (17), Jane (15) and William (9) with them.
In 1871, Isaac and Mary are missing in the census. Dont confuse with another Isaac (b.1814) and Mary family from Warrington.
In 1881, Isaac is an inmate at Bolton Union Workhouse, Fishpool, Farnworth, the year of his death.
There is another Issac Mather from England recorded in 1880 US census, living at Warick, Kent, Rhode Island, Working at Print Works, Aged 69 (b.1811).
Isaac's daughter Eliza, lived in the same house as Samuel and Alice Mather, but 40 years after.

James
Mather
In 1841, James (25) and Lomas (20) Mather were living at Marsh Lane, Atherton with Thomas Thompson (all 3 cotton carders) and Joseph and Mary Hayes.
Lomas Mather is likely to be John Mather's brother (as witness to marriage and other evidence), so it follows that James may also be a brother.
1793 - ~1793
Maria
Mather
"Maria the Daughter of James and Happy Mather in Dean Parish was baptised Dec'r the 4 1793 by me Chris Hopper". This child must have died as another Maria was baptised two years later.

Joseph Barron was a widower when he married Happy Mather in 1816
Johseph was a shoemaker, and died July 1822 with Will. He was buried 23 Jul 1822 at the Wesleyan Methodist, Bolton with his later wife Happy Cheetham (nee Mather) and her son Samuel Mather.

80
William was at Goose Cote Hill in 1792 when Alice was baptised. The farm here would later become a workhouse.
17 Jun 1779, William Mather, a weaver, married Alice Holt. Their witness was John Knowles. This is probably the John (born 1746) son of John and Alice Knowles of Turton, who was a similar age.
There is a gap of 13 years, where William and Betty may have had children.
In 1792, William Mather and Betty (nee Holt) has a daughter Alice.

In 1841, Samuel (aged 15, rounded) was with his parents and family at Waterloo, Little Bolton.
19 Feb 1849, Samuel Mather, spinner of Little Bolton, son of Samuel married Ann Nightingale. James Brooks, Samuel's brother-in-law (Alice Mather's husband), was a witness.
In 1851, Samuel and Ann (23 & 21) were living at 48 Blackburn Road. Ann Mather (37, Solomon's daughter) was a neighbour. Their first son John, born in 1849 had died an infant.
Between 1852-55 the family moved from Sharples to Eastern Bolton district between, then to Little Bolton by 1859.

Samuel Johnson and Jane Bleakley and family were also neighbours in 1861 and 1871, so may be related.
Samuel was a spinner when his children John and Alice were Baptised.
In 1898, Samuel died and Ann a year later. Samuel, Ann and three others are all buried in the same Mather grave at Astley Bridge.
1763 - ~1764
Susanna

1
Susanna probably died an infant about 1764, as their next daughter is also a Susan (b.1766). I can find no Bolton marriage for Susanna Mather, although there is one for Susan Mather marrying Richard Smith 7 Oct 1787 at Bolton le Moors (which is her sister). Maybe she never died but was baptised twice!

Ann born before Aug 1802
There is no obvious Bolton marriage for Ann. She would be under 16y old if the 29 Dec 1817 marriage to Tom Horrocks is her. The 1823 Bury marriage to Abraham Collins is also uklikely as they were in Rossdendale in 1841.

Maria Mather b.1790, daughter of James and Sarah of Eccles is another.

1828-1837: Holt and Alice were living in Egerton when Thomas and Mary were born.
About 1838 Holt and Alice moved to Leigh where Ellen was baptised, and than back to Walmsey, Turton whee Maria was baptised in 1845
In 1841, Holt and Alice (both 34) were at the Old Globe, (Egerton), Bolton with 5 children: Thomas (13), Mary (11), Rosanne (9), Sevine (7), Ellen (5). NOTE: Information from FindMyPast and Lanc-OPC project as unavailable on Ancestry.co.uk. Old Globe is by Cox Green, Egerton (opposite Mather Fold). Old Globe Cottages BL7 9RB are on Cox Green Road (see 1844 Egerton map).
28 Mar 1847, Holt Mather was a wtness to the marriage of John Heywood (labourer of Sharples) and Ellen Hamer (Widow of Sharples, dau of Joseph Lever).
In 1851, Holt and Alice (42 & 43) were at 33 Barry Row, Egerton, Turton with son Thomas and his wife Mary Ann (22 & 20) and five daughters; Mary, Rossania, Ellen, Alice and Maria (20, 17, 13, 8 & 6)
"Holt Mather" is shown as the father on Thomas's marriage of 1850. However, Holt may have used another name as there in no death registered fot Holt, and no other records after 1851.
In 1851, the family may have moved to Staffordshire, Mary, daughterr of Holt married Thomas Vickers there.
1808
Alice
Vickers
In 1841, Holt 34 and Alice (both 34) were at the Old Globe, (Egerton), Bolton with 5 children: Thomas (13), Mary (11), Rosanne (9), Sevine (7), Ellen (5).
In 1851, Alice Mather (53, Wid, Housekeeper) and daughters Rose H (28), Ellen (23) and Alice (17) were living with Alice's son-in-law Thomas (and Mary) Vickers at Hindley.
1830
Mary
Mather
The Mary Ann Mather of the same age on the 1851 census is Dau-in-law, wife of Thomas.
In 1852, Mary married Thomas in Staffordshire.
In 1861, Thomas Vickers and Mary (31 & 30) were at the Blue Bell Beer House, Hindley with John (9), Mary (6) and Ellis (3). With them were lodgers Alice Mather (53, housekeeper, his mother); and sisters Rose H (28), Ellen (23), and Alice (17).
1833
Rosannah
Mather
In 1834 Roseannah was baptised, daughter of Holt and Alice Mather of Turton.
In 1841, Rosehannah, aged 9, was with parents at Old Globe, Turton.
In 1851, Roseanna, aged 17 was a muel piecer at Barry Row, Turton with parents Holt and Alice and family.
In 1861, Rose H (Rose Hannah) was 28 and living with her mother Alice and married sister Mary Vickers at Hindley.
Rosannah Mather married at Leigh in 1862. Either Thomas Brocklehurst or James Welsh
1838
Ellen
Mather
In 1861, Ellen was 23 and living with her mother Alice and married sister Mary Vickers at Hindley.
1804 - 1864
Sarah
Bayley
60
60
In 1841, Sarah Mather (35, Weaver) was living with Thomas and Mary Grundy (both 50) at Waterloo, Little Bolton with Ann (10) and John (1), about 4 doors away from Samuel and Alice Mather, but are they related?
In 1829, Sarah Mather married James Grundy, and possibly already had his daughter Ann Mather before they marrried, Then James may have died and Sarah lived with his family, keeping her Mather name.
Sarah was born in Ringley, about 3 miles SE of Bolton according to the 1851 census.
Sarah and William Mather were both single when they married. Acording to Sarah's second marriage in 1844, she was Widowed, and her father was John Bailey. George Brooks's father was James Brooks.
Sarah had Ann (b.1833) and John Mather (b.1840). She was aged ~35, living at Waterloo in 1841. Betty Bayley (18 wks) her niece was present. The Mathers were living with Thomas and Mary Grundy (and William and Betty Grundy).
She probably had a sister-in-law Fanny Bayley, also from Ringley.
~1825
Helen
Mather
Helen (15) and James (8) were together in 1841. It is assumed they are children of William (no baptism to confirm).
1798 - 1799
William
Mather

1
Baptised Westhoughton, some way south-west of Bolton, but not the same William who was baprised at Worsley and married Martha Tildsey. Originly I had these two Williams confused, as both appear to be from Weaver families!
By process of elimination of the other William Mather marriages in Bolton, this William probably married Martha Bleakley in 1825.
There's a William and Martha Mather in Ashton under Lyne in 1841. They have no children, but are of the correct age, so could be them. The only other William and Martha found in 1841 in Bolton are the family from Little Hulton.
Westhoughton is close to Lostock where Williams Grandmother, Elizabeth Howarth was from.

William
Mather

22
In 1832, William married Sarah Bayley. His witness was Henry Isherwood (who may have married his sister Mary Mather 30-Jan-1831 at Kearsley and lived at Hacking Lane in 1841).
After Sarah's husband William Mather died (in 1837), Sarah was a neighbour of Samuel and Alice Mather in 1841, living a few doors away at Waterloo Rd, Little Bolton. Its tempting to think that William is the son of Samuel and Alice but if they baptised him 21 July 1811 then that is too soon after Isaac's birth of 13 Oct 1810.
Sarah's husband must have died after 1837, as they had a child Alice (who died 1838), and John in 1839.
According to baptism of James, William was a Spinner from Shaprles.
~1814 - 1816
Mary
Mather
2
2
Mary was the daughter of Samuel Mather of Great Bolton, but may be another, as several Samuel Mathers. There was no baptism, which indicates she probably is the saughter of this Samuel, as the other children were also not baptised.
1799 - 1838
Nanny
(Nancy)
Mather
39
39
Should Nanny be Nancy or Annie?
Dont confuse this Nanny with the Nanny Mather who married Samuel Astle. The records show that the Nanny who married Samuel Astley was born about 1792 and died 1819.
There ia another Nancy Mather, born 31 May 1799 dau of James and Sally, who died an infant.
There's a Nancy Mather who married William Woods in Haslingden, 31-Dec-1820. This is also another, the daughter of Betty Mather, born 1799 in Haslingden.
The Nancy Mather who married Samuel Kay was born 1803 (from 1851 and 1861 census)
1768 - 1844
Solomon
Mather
76
76
Like his father, Solomon was a weaver. He married Martha Ramsden 20 OCt 1790. It was another Solomon of Edgworth that married Mary Grime 9-Aug-1809 at Bolton.
In 1790, Solomon married Marha Ramsden (Matty) and had Betty and James baptised at Walmsley (1791 & 1792). For 14 years, Births and Baptism are missing until 1806 when Joseph was baptised.
From 1800 Solomon lived at Hall-i’th’-Wood. His son Solomon was born there about 1800, and daughter Catherine and Ann were born there 1809-1813 (see 1871 census).
In 1841, Solomon Mather was still alive at Old Nells, Little Bolton (not Old Nells, Turton), a hand loom weaver with his daughter Ann (25).
30 Nov 1844 Solomon died. His death was reported in the newspaper on 7 Dec 1844. The death certificate (attached) shows he died of "Fits" at Old Ellen's, Sharples aged 76. Old Ellen's and Old Nell's are probably the same place (Nell is a pet name for Ellen).
In 1851 he was a neighbour of Joseph (of Tong) and Mary Mather and family (James, Joseph, Ellen, Ann & Jane). Joseph was his first son.
1760 - 1842
Isaac
Mather
82
82
Isaac was born in Turton, late 1759 or early 1760, before his parents Ann and Richard were married. There are no other Richard and Ann marriages in Lancashire around this time! A 1760 birth is consistent with his 1842 death, aged 82.
16 Nov 1763, Isaac “child of Richard Mather & Ann (formerly Howarth)” was baptised at Walmsley Meeting House, Bolton le Moors. This was after his parents had married and also after the baptism of his older brother James at Bank Street (Presbyterian), Bolton.
4 Jan 1787, Isaac Mather, a weaver married Alice Fielding, a spinster at St Peter's, Bolton. Neither could sign their name.
About 1787, their first son James was born and was later a farmer at Entwistle. Solomon born 1798 is probably also their son (as know to be born at Toppings), and named after his brother. Neither have baptism records.
Daughters Ann, born Dec 1790 and Esther born March 1792 were baptised at Walmsley Presbyterian Meeting House. Parents “Isaac Mather and Alice (formerly Fielding)” were named and were living at Toppings, Turton.
From 1794 to 1815 the Walmsley baptism records are lost. However, Joseph born 1798 and Alice born 1801 are believed to be theirs and known to be born in Turton. They were neighbours farming at Higher Know Mill, and Isaac was also living there with Alice before he died.
In 1803, Nancy Mather was probably Isaac and Alice’s last child. Census records confirm Nancy was born in Turton and was living at Toppings Road, Turton in 1861, 1871 and 1881.
4 Jan 1815, Isaac Mather was witness to the marriage of James Grime and Jane Hardman. It was James Grime and Isaac's son Solomon (and others) that were transported for 14 years in 1819.
In 1841, Isaac Mather (80, weaver) was at Know Mills, Edgworth, with his married daughter Alice Settle (b.1801). He died the following year. Neighbours at Higher Know Mills were farmer Joseph & Elizabeth Mather (40 & 35) and family (his assumed son).
Isaac died of Old Age 19 Feb 1842. He was still with his daughter and son-in-law Abraham Settle, Occupier, who reported his death.
1791 - 1842
William
Mather
51
51
A William Mather died in Little Bolton in 1842 but who is he? Is he related to our L.B. Mather family?
From the 1841 census (Barlow Row, L.B.) it appears that William and Jane (both 45) are husband and wife, with Helen (15) and James (8). However, there is no marriage for such. Instead, there are probably cousins - tbc.
William died in 1842, aged 50 so was born about 1792. The closest matching Bolton baptisms, is for son of James and Sarah. This fits will with his children's names.
William married Catherine, but she died in 1834 so William's children were brought up by him and "Jane". Wow is Jane Mather related?
1791 - ~1860

Elizabeth
Mather
If Elizabeth was known as Betty (after her Mother), then Betty Mather married James Makinson, a farmer, on 29 Nov 1913. However this appears to be another family who had 9 or 10 children from 1814-34 baptised at Blackrod. It appears Elizabeth never married.
There are several Elizabeth Mather marriages at Manchester that havn't been investigated.
In 1814: A double wedding: On 13 Feb at Leigh, James Mather a weaver, married Esther Platt and James Makin married Elizabeth Mather. Thomas, Hil or Hid (Hilda ?) and James Lees were witness.
In 1834, Elizabeth Mather of Water Street S, Ashton-Under-Line was a straw hat maker. Probably another!
1759 - 1837
Betty
Holt
78
78
There's one Betty Holt in Bolton or Turton born 1752, and many others in Lancashire (Middleton, Rochdale, Oldham, Burnley) which are probably too far away. This Betty Holt (recorded as Hoult), daughter of Peter is born about 1758 in G.B. so a good match.
HOLT, widow, which may be her, was living on the Blackburn Road in 1811 and on the L.B. poor list.
Dont confuse with William Mather and Betty Beswich, married in Blackburn in 1797, and living in Pole Lane, Turton.
In 1837, Betty Mather of Turton died and was buried at Turton St Anne 10 May 1837, aged 81.
In 1841 another Betty Mather (82) nee Edge was living at Cannon Street.
1751 - 1823
Isobel
(Elizabeth)
Wilkinson
72
72
The last two children, Nancy and Bould were baptised with mother named as Elizabeth. However, when Bould died an infant, the mother is Isabel. After 1788, Isobel was known as Elizabeth (Isobel is a diminutive form of Elizabeth), but after James died, she reverted back to Isobel.
7 March 1794, Isobel's husband James died, leaving Isobel with no support (so "Poor")..
25 March 1794, "Bould son of Isabel Mather, Poor, of Great Bolton" died and buried at St Peter's, aged 1.
After James died, Isobel remarried. There is a marriage for Isabella Mather spinster and John Robinson (weaver) 8 Mar 1797, and then another to John Lever (widower) and Isabella Mather (widow) on 24 Dec 1798 with witness Richard Haslam.

Mary

May have married George Darbyshire (1800, Eccles) or James Elliot (1796, Cockerham) or most likely Henry Warburton (1801, Bolton, crofter).
1843 - 1908
Alice
Mather
65
65
In 1861, Alice was 17 and living with her mother Alice and married sister Mary Vickers at Hindley.
In 1861, Allice of Little Bolton may have married Robert Calderwood at Little Bolton St George and emigrated to the USA.
In July 1863, Alice possibly married John Cadwell at Leigh (unconfirmed)
1845
Maria
Mather
Around 1860, Maria and her sister Mary moved to Staffordshire.
Maria was missing (not with mother) in 1861. She was working as a servant girl in Stafordshire, aged 16.
In 1874, Maria Mather married Charles (Mellor or Dickinson) in Staffordshire.
1798
James
Tyldesley
Who was James Tyldesley with Samuel and Alice in 1841? Is this a brother-in-law or just a lodger? There are no Bolton records for a James Tyldesley marrying a Mather.
1766 - 1853
Susan
Mather
87
87
It is likely Susan and Susannah Mather are the same parson and was baptised twice (but why wasnt Isaac?). This is because there is no death record for the Susanna baptised 1763, and Susan was also knows as Susanna when her children were baptised (Smith).
Susan Mather married Richard Smith of Deane on 7 Oct 1787. She was Susan when Thomas baptised (1797), but then Susannah for Richard (1799).
In 1841, Susan Nutter, aged 70, was at Tottington Lower End. Is this her?
There is also a burial record for Susan Mather at Turton, 27 Mar 1853, aged 83, which could be her if she hadn't married. The death record is for a Susan Nutter, aged 83, so Mather could be her maiden name. Susan Nutter was witness to the 1816 marriage of William Mather and Catherine Pilkington. However, this may be Sussanah Greenhalgh who married William Nutter in 1791.
1792 - 1879
Alice
Mather
87
87
Alice appears to be born about 1788, although only Turton baptism is for 1792, so parents are unconfirmed..
9 Sep 1810, Alice MATHER, a spinster married James Mather at St Peter's, Bolton.
This is the only Alice found born in Bolton of similar age. She appears to have no (baptised) brothers or sisters, which is strange as she was born 13 years after her parents marriage (so could be wrong birth record or records lost, or a widow).
Could she be a widower, married before Samuel in 1810 (after 1804)? Cant be Alice Makinson that married Nathan Mather in 1809 or Alice Calderbank married Thomas Mather in 1805 as they had a long and fruitfull marriages. There are no other candidates for an Alice from Turton.
Alice, wife is present on 1841 and 1851 census with Samuel and family.
The 1851 census shows Samuel and Alice (both 60) at 4 Simpson Street, was from Turton. Her son George (21, a Collier), daughter Happy Barrow (married, 28, piecer) and grandaughter Maria Barrow (7) were living with them.
In 1871, Alice (82) was a boarder at 67 Blackbank Street, living with her daughter Happy and Phineas Shuttleworth and family. 3 doors away at No 73 was her son Samuel and Ann Mather. Between them at No 71 was James Cunliffe Hamer and his wife Happy Hamer. How is this other Happy person related?
1810 - 1810

In 1841 Ellen Mather (15, F.S.) & Ann Worrel (25 F.S.) were employed by Samuel Taylor at Chorley New Rd. Could this be a missing daughter?
There are no obvious marriages for an Ellen Mather with father Samuel, so this is probably a red herring, although the Ellen working as a servant girl is unexplained!
This may be Ellen Mather in 1861 at Foundry Court, East Bolton (dau, single, 37) with Mother Jame Mather (Wid, 67, born Wigan)

This may NOT be the son of James Mather and Betty Lyon, as their son James was baptisd in Jan 1785, but another Betty baptised in April. The baptism indicatea a married mother, but these parents Betty Lyon and James didnt marry until September, five months after the baptism. Also the mother was very young.
If its the same James Mather that married Happy Lomax, then another James was baptised 12 years later, so this James must have died an infant.
James Mather married Betty and moved to Hulme Manchester. James was 78 in 1861, born Bolton.
~1782
<unknown>
?
Appart from the families of Peter Mather (and Ellin) and Richard Mather (and Ann), records do not start at Walmsley Chapel until 1785, with James Mather being on eof the first recorded. There is a gap between 1779 and 1785.
1797 - 1843
Henry
Mather

45
Henry was from Haslingden and may have lived in Manchester which is where he probably married Mary and is where son WIlliam was born.
In 1832, Henry and Mary had a son Charles baptisd at Walmsley, Turton, abode "Top of the Lane". Charles died in 1834, aged 1yr, 11mo abode "Morton Row, Turton".
In 1841, Henry and Mary (both 40) were at Bedford Row, Egerton, Turton with with James (15), William (14), Henry (12) and Caroline (5).
In 1843, Henry died and in 1851, and Mary (53, Widow) was visiting Henry Blackledge (40) in Yorkshire with her three children William, Henry and Caroline (22, 20 & 15)
They appear to be a family, but no Bolton marriage exists so probably married at Prestwich on 23 May 1824.

Peter and Mary Barnes (nee Rothwell) must have adopted Alice Mather in 1790, as they are recorded as the parents when Alice died the following year. Peter Barns, a weaver, and Mary had married in Bolton, 9 Oct 1771. They already had three children, Ann (1774), William (1776), Peter (1778,80,84 two died), Thomas (1788), befoe they had Alice Mather Barnes baptised (1790).
The middle name suggests Alice's maiden name was Mather, so Mary was widowed, when she married Peter Barns in 1771. The 7 Feb 1785 marriage of John Mather and Alice Barnes is about right for them to be the biological parents.
If Alice was adopted, then it's likely her true parents were William and Betty Mather (nee Holt). They had another Alice born in 1792, a year after this Alice's death. Perhaps Alice was illigiimate, and her bioligical father was William - Who knows?

There is also a Nancy Mather, daughter of John and Nancy, born the same year, and a Nancy Mather b.1818 daughter of James a farmer from Turton who married Richard Holden.
Possibly this is this the Nancy Mather born 2 May 1790, married John Hart Jnr 25 Jun 1811 at Lyme Connecticut, and died 22 Jun 1834, Lyme, Connecticut, USA, althouith other trees have her parents as Sylvester Mather and Elizabeth Waite.

Sarah Mather married James Cottom, a mechanic on 11 Jan 1837, just 16 days before their daughter Martha was baptised - That was close !
Sarah was living in the Union Buildings, E Bolton with James's parents Thomas and Martha (assumed) and family in 1841, aged 25 and with daughter Martha (4). James was missing and died in August.

The Nancy Mather that married Samuel Astley in 1814 was born about 1792 (so aged 22 about when married) and died Jan 1819, aged 27. This is clearly another Nancy Mather.
This Nancy probably married John Horrocks, a weaver 6 Jan 1802.
In 1841, Nancy Horrocks (not Knowles) was still alive, aged 70, with Mary (34), Margaret (27), Charles (24). Then is listed James (34) with Betty (10), Adam (6), and Thomas (1). They are living in Dean Street, L.B.

23 Feb 1873, Thomas Mather, widowed, a coton spinner, son of Holt Mather married Ann Pendlebury (nee Willcock, daughter of George Willcock).
In 1881 Thomas and Ann (50 & 52) are at 120 Mount Street, Little Bolton with John (19) and Alice Ann (17) and grandson Robert (aged 3).

Sevinia (or Lavina) is missing from the 1861 census. There is no Lancashire death record for Lavinia, Levinia or Sevinia.
In Q4/1881, Lavinia Mather married James Partington at Radcliffe, Bury. Lavinia Partington died at Haywood in 1940, aged 76 (so born 1863). This is another Levinia, born Bury.

"Isaac" (although indexed as Frane) is very difficult to read on record, but Isaac is probably correct. He was baptised at the same time (same day) as Alice, daughter of James Holt and Sarah Howarth, both from Goose Colt Hill, Turton.
Isaac may have married Sarah Jackson (3-Jan-1816). However that Isaac was 52 in 1851, a farmer of 28 acres born Turton with his son Joseph.

Robert, "Grandson" was with Thomas and Ann in 1881 (aged 3) and 1891 (13). Not actually adopted, but living with his grandparents.
Who was Robert's father? Robert (b.1876), son of Richard married Eliza Greenhaigh in 1907, but his grandfather Thomas Mather didnt have a son Richard. He cant be John Robert Mather b.1877 son of John, both coal miners as that John was deceased. We could be missing a Richard from this family. Where was a Richard Mather born in Q4/1854 who in unaccounted for, and could fill a gap in the births.
Birth registers imply Robert is an illegitimate son, probably of Levinia or Ann.

There is a gap of 13 years, where William and Betty may have had children.
In 1792, William Mather and Betty (nee Holt) has a daughter Alice.

WARNING: Parents are not confirmed.
We know Joseph and John were brothers because thay both had daughters named Betsy, and in 1881 the same informant, Joseph Allen, recorded both their deaths.
Joseph was born in Tyldsley or Tong in 1778 and baptised at Astley, St Stephen.
Joshua (and Jesus) are alternative early names for Joseph. It appears then in 1805, he used the name Joshua, not Joseph to have is daughter Elizabeth baptised. (The only UK Joshua and Mary marriage was in Derbyshire in 1789 and that Joshua was still there in 1841, aged 70).
In 1841, Joseph (63), Thomas (40) and John (38), all weavers were at Kay Street. Mary Mather (possibly a sister-in-law) was 60. His great nephew John Heaton (7) was living with them.
In 1851 Joseph and Mary (both 73) were at 97 Kay Street, Little Bolton with sons Thomas (52) and John (50).
From 1861 Joseph's son John became a Hair Cutter and moved up the road with Joseph from 97 to 204 Kay St. Joseph Mather was also recorded as a Barber in the trade directory.
In 1871, Joseph's son John was a Hairdresser at 2 Simpson Street which is probably where Joseph died in 1864. Our other Mather family also lived at Simpson Street and Coopers Square (see map).

James Mather and Happy Lomax were Samuel's parents, but which James?. James (b.1769) son of James; or James (b.1761) son of Richard and Ann; or James (b.1763) son of Elias and Mary ... or another? James son of Richard fits well, both parents using Bank Street and Isaac being the first sons of Richard and Samuel.
James probably lived at Toppings, Turton (unconfirmed, based on brothers Isaac and Solomon.
James was 29 when he married Happy. He may have been married before, quite possibly to Betty Lyon who died in 1789, aged only 20. James had 1 or 2 young children to care for and needed a wife quickly. James signed his own name on both marriages, although the signatures are not a good match at least he was educatred and sign his name (5 years apart).
James and his future wife Happy were both baptised at Bank Street, Bolton although James was from Turton. Richard and Ann Mather had only been married a few months, so this may be why!
In 1799, James and Happy were living in Ainsworth (Hainsworth) when daughter Nanny was baptised. This is about 2 miles SE of Harwood.

James Mather (1797-1864) is the older brother of Nanny Mather, son of James Mather and Happy Lomax.
James's first wife, Mary died aged 24 in 1827. Three years later, James (now shown as a Widower) married a pregnant Jane Dakin, who gave James a daughter, also Jane. His young wife Jane also died, possibly giving birth or very soon after! Their daughter Jane also died after 6 months.
James was on the 1831 L.B. Poor List, living at Blackburn Street (same as his mother in 1811).
James, who already had two infant sons, married a much younger Mercy Grime in 1833, a year after his second wife Jane had died. Their first son William was born soon after. Daughter Esther Mather born 1840 confirms MMN = GRIME.
On the 1841 census, James and Mercy (35 and 30) were living in Sidney Street (see map). His son William (9) was listed first below the parents followed by John (15) and Samuel (12) from his earlier marriages, and then their three daughters, Ellen, Mary Ann and Esther (6, 4 & 1).
In 1851, James and Marcy (51 & 41) are at Back Sydney Street. All their children were with them: William (17), Ellen (16), Mary Ann (14) and Esther (10). Neighbours were William and Jane Booth (41 & 44). I have DNA matches to both families, possibly because James's sister Nanny Mather married Richard Booth in 1825.
He was a Presbyterian, and some of the family used St. Andrews in Bolton. His oldest son John became a sucessful beer seller, running the Rothwell Street Tavern in Bolton.
His daughter Mary Ann lived at 12 Shaw Street, Seacombe when she re-married in 1900.
3 July 1864 James Mather of Lever Street died, aged 68. His death was recorded in the Bolton Chronical.

James was born in Hindley.
James was baptised 27 Oct 1811 at St Mary's Deane. There is no matching adult death for James, unless he was born earlier. James may have been born about 1810 before his parents married.
He cant be the James illegitamate son of Ann Mather of Turton, born 16 Apr 1811 (the day after they married) and baptised 25 May 1811 as the death age doesn't match.
In 1841, Jane Banks (60), was head (listed first), assumed to be Margaret's mother, living at Back Barry Row, Turton. James and Margaret Mather were both 30. Also present were Elizabeth Horrox (i.e. Horrocks), aged 35 with Banks Horrox (9) and Edwin Horrox (1). Holt Mather lived here in 1851.
In 1851, James, now a Stripper and Grinder, and Margaret Mather (both 52) were at 9 Baton Street, Little Bolton with sister-in-law Ellen Banks (28) and nephews Joseph and Walter Banks (5 & 3).

Richard was a Baptist. He was married by John Lutener (a Baptist Minister).
Richard, like his father, is a weaver, but a labourer in 1846 when Henry married Sarah.
Richard and Hannah were living at Raikes (Rakes), Harwood from 1811 to probably 1830 when Ann and sons Richard and John were baptised. The 1851 census shows that Richard's first son Nathaniel's daughter Hannah (i.e. his grandaughter) was born at Harwood Lee in 1830.
In 1836, John Howarth, John Haslam and William Knowles are registered (Poll Book) at Raikes.
In 1841, Mary Heaton (60) and George Holt (20) were at "Raikes" (a farm on the Tottington Road). This is the same place! Richard (60, Ag Lab) was at Dandy Row with sons John (20), James (15) and (possibly adopted son) Thomas (18 or 12 or 8). Hannah had died in 1839.

Oct 1837, Lomas Mather was a witness at John and Ellen's wedding. He is the only Lomas Mather living in Lancashire in 1841. He is possibly John's brother for several reasons:
1) He was witness to John's marriage
2) Named Lomax after their grandmother, Happy Lomax
3) All except Isaac have no baptism record
4) Had left home before 1841, so not with family
5) Father was Samuel, a weaver when he married in 1845
In 1841, James and Lomas Mather (25 & 20), cotton carders, were living at Marsh Lane, Atherton. Also Thomas Thompson (20) and Joseph and Mary Hayes (both 45).
5 Oct 1845, Lomas married Sarah Wood nee Henshall, both from New Islington (Ancoats, Manchester) at Manchester Cathederal. This is NOT the Sarah Henshall who was married to David Wood (as she was still married to him in 1841 and 1851).
In 1846 Lomas and Sarah had a daughter Rebecca at Manchester.
In 1871 Lomas Mather (50, Unmarried) born Bolton was a lodger (and a Hatter) at a lodging house with 12 lodgers at 20+22 Queens Street, St Pauls, Bolton.

WARNING: Parent are not confirmed.
Richard and Peter are most probably brothers, as both families baptisms are listed on the first page of the Walmsley Chapel baptism book. One Peter's baptism record suggest they may from Hulton (Deane), and sons of John Mather, although it is more likely this is another Peter and they are from Turton and their records are lost!
Another possibility is that Richard is the son of Richard Mather and Susan Smith who married at Manchester 1 Feb 1732. This would explain Richard's daughter Susan (i.e. named after her grandmother).
Richard was of this Parish (Bolton), and a weaver. He was probably about 24 when he married Ann, which was almost certainly his first marriage (as there are no earlier marriages in Bolton for a Richard Mather). A Turton burial in 1826 for Richard, aged 89 supports this.
Another likely possibility is that he is from Warrington, son of John a Butcher, and Ellen. This family also had a Peter, and Richard (and Isaac) are missing from the Warrington records. Peter stayed in Warrington as a Tobacconist, so they are not the brothers. His other siblings all remained in Warrington and became butchers. First son Isaac would be named after his younger brother.
Richard and Ann already had Isaac, and James was on the way when they married on 6 April 1761. Isaac and Susanna were baptised at Bank Street Unitarian, but Isaac had missed his baptism. They changed to Walmsley Presbyterian (perhaps they were not known there), and had Isaac baptised out of order, followed by the other children in the correct order.
The first children were baptised at Bank Street Unitarian and then after 1763 at Walmsley Presbyterian.
25 May 1826, Richard died in the Turton Workhouse, aged 89.
