Maria's father was Thomas Williams and her mother was Mary Woodworth.  Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Woodworth and Alice Dobb. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Thomas, Alice and Mary.  She was the third oldest of the five children.  She died at the age of 65 in August 1875 in the Wirral.²
