Ellen never knew her father, who died the year she was born. Her mother didnt remarry till she was 5, so its likely Ellen and Phinneas Shuttleworth (her brother) were brought up by a single mother.
From the 1881 census we see than John Bond had died between 1873-1881, and Ellen had remarried Thomas Strickland. She had her three children with her.
