Sarah was born in 1887 in Newchurch in Rossendale.1  Sarah's father was Alfred James Watkins and her mother was Sarah Ann Drain.  Her paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Sarah Watkins; her maternal grandparents were John Draine and Winifred Astley. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Robert, Elizabeth, Rose and Bertha.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
