Bertha's father was Alfred James Watkins and her mother was Sarah Ann Drain.  Her paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Sarah Watkins; her maternal grandparents were John Draine and Winifred Astley. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Robert, Sarah, Elizabeth and Rose.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
