James was born in September 1884 in Great Lever.1  James' father was Thomas Walker and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Riley. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Martha and Sarah.  He was the second youngest of the five known children.
