Ernest's father was John Turner and his mother was Alice Martha Pritchard.  His paternal grandparents were James Turner and Sarah Varty. He had three brothers and a sister, named Calvert, Tom, Archibald and (Sarah).  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had three half-brothers named William, Richard and John.
