John was born in 1761 in Holt and his baptism took place there on June 7th, 1761.1  John's father was John Tomlinson and his mother was Elizabeth Tinslay.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Jane Rylance. He had a sister named Elizabeth.  He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-sister named Mary.
