Gladys was born in 1903 in Newton in Makerfield.1  Gladys' father was Henry James Tait and her mother was Alice Dyer Atkins.  Her paternal grandparents were William Tait and Jane Gawthorpe; her maternal grandparents were John Hind Atkins and Sarah Emily Dyer. She had two brothers and a sister, named Harry, Arthur and Lily.  She was the youngest of the four known children.
