Arthur was born in 1887 in Warrington.1  Arthur's father was Henry James Tait and his mother was Alice Dyer Atkins.  His paternal grandparents were William Tait and Jane Gawthorpe; his maternal grandparents were John Hind Atkins and Sarah Emily Dyer. He had a brother and two sisters, named Harry, Lily and Gladys.  He was the third oldest of the four known children.
