Richard was born in 1839 in Samlesbury.1   Richard's father was Robert Stevenson and his mother was Ellen Beck. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Anthony, Robert, Rachel and Alice.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 71 in 1910.
