Thomas was born in June 1871 in Bolton.1  Thomas' father was John Southern and his mother was Nancy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Jane Heys. He had a sister named Mary.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at 3 months old in September 1871 in Bolton.1
