Thomas was born in September 1844 in Bolton.1  Thomas' father was John Snelson and his mother was Betty Walmsley.  His maternal grandparents were John Walmsley and Betty. He had two brothers named Robert and John.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-sister named Eliza.
