Thomas was born in December 1840.  Thomas' father was William Rosthorn and his mother was Elizabeth Booth.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Rostron and Mary Holt. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Samuel, James, William, Mary, Rachel and Elizabeth. He had an adopted sister named Mary.
