John's father was Thomas Roberts and his mother was Sarah Hopley.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Hopley and Jane Ann Jones. He had a sister named Gwendoline.  He was the younger of the two known children.  He died at the age of 73 in 1981.

‌John and Dilys were married in a religious ceremony in June 1936 in Wrexham.²
