Michael's father was Michael Pickles and his mother was Martha Cowburn.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Pickles and Mary Walsh. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John, William, Thomas, Mary, Betty, Ann, Mary and Martha.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 67 in December 1899 in Bradford.³
